• Director Mani Ratnam handpicked Chithra for Ninaivu Chinnam (1989) after seeing her in a stage play. Vijayakumar was already cast, but Chithra was so nervous on day one that Vijayakumar quietly told her to just look at his shoulder during close-ups — that trick got her through the first scene.
• In Cheran Pandiyan (1991), Vijayakumar played a fierce village chieftain. Chithra’s character was the soft-spoken wife. On set, Vijayakumar would deliberately stay in character between takes — not speaking to anyone — to keep the tension alive. Chithra later said his silence made her cry more naturally in their emotional scenes.
• During the shoot of Periya Kudumbam (1995), Chithra’s father passed away suddenly. Vijayakumar drove four hours to her hometown, attended the funeral unannounced, and sat with her family through the night. She later called him her 'cinema appa' (film father) in a private gathering.
• The success of Ninaivu Chinnam (1989) directly led to Chithra being cast in Mani Ratnam’s next film, Thalapathi (1991). Vijayakumar had recommended her to Mani Ratnam during the dubbing sessions, saying 'she can hold her own against Rajinikanth.' She did.
• Chithra once told a magazine: 'Vijayakumar sir never gave me acting tips. He just acted opposite me with such intensity that I had no choice but to match him. That’s how I learned.'
