• Manobala was a busy character actor when Vinu Chakravarthy, then a writer-turned-director, cast him in Paru Paru Pattanam Paru (1986). Vinu specifically wanted Manobala because he needed an actor who could switch between comedy and menace in the same scene — something Manobala had never done before.
• On the sets of Mallu Vetti Minor (1990), Vinu Chakravarthy would write dialogue in the morning and hand it to Manobala, who then improvised half of it in his own slang. Vinu later said Manobala's ad-libs made the comedy land harder than his script ever could.
• Their third film Vetri Padigal (1991) launched a young actor named Sivakumar — later known as Suriya — in his first credited role. Manobala and Vinu Chakravarthy both vouched for him to the producer after seeing him at a stage play.
• Manobala and Vinu Chakravarthy were close friends off-screen. After every shoot, they would share a cup of tea at a specific shop in Kodambakkam and argue about old Tamil films for hours. Vinu's son later said that ritual never stopped, even after they stopped working together.
• Manobala once said in an interview: 'Vinu Chakravarthy was the only director who let me be a fool on screen without making me feel like one. He trusted my timing more than I did.'
