• Mani Ratnam first approached Karthi for Kaatru Veliyidai after seeing his raw intensity in Paruthiveeran. But Karthi almost said no — he felt the character was too dark and unlikeable. Mani convinced him over a single dinner, telling him, 'This is the role that will show you can do anything.'
• On the sets of Kaatru Veliyidai, Mani Ratnam gave Karthi zero rehearsals for the emotional breakdown scene in the hospital. He just whispered 'think of your father' and rolled camera. Karthi broke down on cue — that single take made it to the final cut.
• Because Karthi pushed for Ponniyin Selvan to be shot in sync sound (recording audio live on set), Mani Ratnam changed his entire production workflow for the first time in his career. Every actor had to deliver dialogues in pure old Tamil without dubbing — a trend that later influenced other period films like Sarpatta Parambarai.
• During the PS1 shoot, Karthi would quietly bring Mani Ratnam his favourite filter coffee every morning at 6 AM — no assistant, no fanfare. Mani later told a crew member it reminded him of working with his old assistant directors in the 90s. The ritual lasted through both parts.
• Karthi on Mani Ratnam after PS2 wrap: 'He doesn't tell you what to feel. He just puts you in a room, gives you a look, and you suddenly know exactly who your character is. I've never had a director trust me that much.'
• In Kaatru Veliyidai, Mani Ratnam deliberately shot Karthi's close-ups with a 50mm lens — forcing him to act with micro-expressions instead of broad gestures. Karthi later said it was the hardest acting he'd ever done, but it taught him to 'act with just the eyes.' He used that lesson in every PS scene as Vallavarayan.
