The Srinivasan & Singampuli partnership

Between 2015 and 2018, they barely worked apart — 7 films in 3 years. 2016 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. From Sagaptham (2015) to Enna Thavam Seitheno (2018).

It started with Sagaptham (2015).

The shape of the work

Srinivasan acted in every film; Singampuli acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Srinivasan and Singampuli first teamed up for Sagaptham (2015) because Singampuli, who usually writes dark comedies, wanted to prove he could pull off a full-on action film. He called Srinivasan directly and said, 'I need a hero who looks like he can actually break bones, not dance.'
  • On the set of Ka Ka Ka Po (2016), Singampuli realized Srinivasan was terrible at delivering punchlines on cue. So he started feeding him the comedy lines during the actual take — whispering from behind the camera. Srinivasan would repeat them with a half-second delay, which gave the jokes a deadpan rhythm that became the film's signature.
  • Merlin (2018) was the film that launched actress Merin Philip into the Tamil industry. Singampuli cast her after seeing her in a Malayalam ad, and Srinivasan insisted she be given equal screen time — not just a love interest role. She went on to do 10+ Tamil films directly because of that break.
  • During the shoot of Jeyikkira Kuthira (2017), Srinivasan's father passed away. Singampuli shut down production for a week, drove to his village, and sat with him silently for two days. They never spoke about it afterward, but Srinivasan later told a mutual friend, 'He didn't say a word. That's why I trust him with my career.'
  • Singampuli once said in a 2019 interview: 'Srinivasan is the only actor who will argue with me about a scene for an hour, then do exactly what I said — and make it look like his idea. That's not acting. That's marriage.'
  • In Enna Thavam Seitheno (2018), Singampuli wrote a 12-minute single-take scene where Srinivasan's character has to break down from laughter to tears. Srinivasan insisted on doing it in one go, no cuts. Singampuli kept the camera rolling even after the script ended — and the final 90 seconds of unscripted silence made it into the theatrical cut.
