• Arjun was already a star when he signed Karnaa (1995), but Selva was a debutant director. Selva had written the script with another hero in mind — Arjun read it, liked it, and agreed on one condition: Selva had to prove he could handle a big-budget action film. Selva showed up with a detailed shot-by-shot storyboard. That got Arjun on board.
• On the sets of Aanai (2005), Arjun would often rewrite his own dialogues in the morning. Selva never stopped him. Instead, he'd adjust the blocking around Arjun's new lines. The result was a looser, more natural performance from Arjun — something his other directors rarely got from him.
• Karnaa (1995) introduced a new kind of anti-hero in Tamil cinema — a smuggler with a moral code. That character template directly influenced later films like Bala's Sethu (1999) and even some of Vijay's early 2000s roles. Selva and Arjun didn't just make a hit; they accidentally started a trend.
• Arjun and Selva never became close friends off-screen. After Manikanda (2007) flopped, they didn't speak for years. Selva later admitted in an interview that he felt Arjun blamed him for the film's failure. They never worked together again.
• Selva once said about Arjun: 'He doesn't just act — he owns the frame. You can't direct him like a newcomer. You have to let him breathe, then catch what he gives you.' He said this in a 2006 interview for Aanai's release.
