The Kamal Haasan & Ponnambalam partnership
One film towers over the rest: Indian at 8.2/10. They saved their best for last — Indian (8.2/10) came 7 years in. The work is uneven: Indian (8.2) at one end, Vetri Vizha (3.9) at the other.
From Vetri Vizha (1989) to Indian (1996). It started with Vetri Vizha (1989).
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Apoorva Sagodharargal; the 1990s to Indian. Kamal Haasan acted in every film; Ponnambalam acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Kamal Haasan personally insisted on casting Ponnambalam in 'Apoorva Sagodharargal' (1989) after seeing him in a small role. The director Singeetam Srinivasa Rao was initially hesitant — Ponnambalam was a newcomer with zero box-office pull. Kamal pushed, and Ponnambalam got the part that made him a household name.
- In 'Michael Madana Kama Rajan' (1990), Kamal played four roles. Ponnambalam played the same henchman across all four — but Kamal made him adjust his body language slightly for each version of the hero. Ponnambalam later said that Kamal would literally stand next to him and mirror his own posture to show him how to react differently to each character.
- Ponnambalam was a bodybuilder before films. During the shoot of 'Vetri Vizha' (1989), Kamal would challenge him to arm-wrestling matches between takes. Ponnambalam always won, but Kamal never stopped asking. The crew said it became their daily ritual.
- Ponnambalam once said in an interview: 'Kamal sir doesn't just act with you — he acts through you. He'd whisper instructions while the camera was rolling, and I'd just follow his voice. I never had to think.'
- The fight scene between Kamal and Ponnambalam in 'Indian' (1996) — where the old man takes on the giant — directly inspired the climax of the 2016 Tamil film 'Joker'. The director of that film admitted in a press meet that he rewatched 'Indian' just to study how they shot a small hero beating a much larger villain without it looking fake.
