• Karunakaran was the one who insisted Sangili Murugan be cast in Jigarthanda (2014). The director Karthik Subbaraj had someone else in mind, but Karunakaran pushed for Murugan after seeing him in a small theater role. That film put both of them on the map.
• In Ratsasan (2018), Karunakaran played the comic relief while Sangili Murugan played the creepy sidekick. The trick was that Murugan never rehearsed his lines — he'd just stare at Karunakaran during takes, forcing Karunakaran to improvise his reactions. That unscripted tension made their scenes together the most quoted in the film.
• They never exchanged phone numbers. For all four films, Karunakaran would just show up at Sangili Murugan's house unannounced to discuss scenes. Murugan once told a magazine, 'He knocks, I open, we talk, he leaves. That's our friendship.'
• Their pairing in Jigarthanda (2014) directly inspired the 2021 Malayalam film 'Aarkkariyam' — the director said he wanted that same 'uncomfortable but loyal' dynamic between a nervous guy and a silent older man. He cast two actors who had never worked together before, just to recreate the vibe.
• Karunakaran said in a 2019 interview: 'Sangili Murugan doesn't act. He just stands there and the scene becomes real. I had to work twice as hard to keep up.'
• The 2023 version of Vallavanukkum Vallavan almost didn't happen. Karunakaran had to track down Sangili Murugan through a mutual friend because Murugan had moved to a village without a phone. Karunakaran drove 6 hours to his house to convince him to come back for one more film.
