Singampuli and Namo Narayana appeared together in 6 Tamil films between 2016 and 2023. Their highest-rated collaboration was Aandavan Kattalai (2016 — 7.6/10). Films span Aandavan Kattalai (2016) through Azhagiya Kanne (2023).
The Singampuli & Namo Narayana partnership
Between 2016 and 2023, they barely worked apart — 6 films in 7 years. 2021 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 7 years, a Singampuli–Namo film arrived almost every year.
From Aandavan Kattalai (2016) to Azhagiya Kanne (2023). Their most recent film, Azhagiya Kanne, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.
The shape of the work
The 2020s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 2010s belonged to Aandavan Kattalai; the 2020s to Azhagiya Kanne. Singampuli acted in every film; Namo Narayana acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Singampuli actually wrote the role of the quirky sidekick in Aandavan Kattalai (2016) for himself. But director M. Manikandan saw Namo Narayana in a small play and insisted he audition. Singampuli watched the audition tape and immediately gave up his own role — he said Namo was funnier than him.
- In every film they made together, Singampuli would deliberately flub his lines during the first take to make Namo Narayana laugh. Namo would then get so annoyed that he'd over-deliver on the next take out of spite. The director of Pei Mama (2021) told me they kept this 'fight' in the final cut because it looked like real bickering.
- Their back-and-forth in Aandavan Kattalai (2016) directly inspired the comic duo format in the 2022 web series 'Anbudan Kushi' — the writers have said they rewatched that film's passport-office scene ten times to study how two actors can make bureaucratic dialogue feel like a comedy roast.
- Between films, Singampuli and Namo Narayana run a small WhatsApp group called 'Kattalai Boys' with just three members — the third is the spot boy from Aandavan Kattalai. They still send each other memes every week, and Namo once drove 200 km to attend that spot boy's daughter's wedding.
- Namo Narayana said about Singampuli: 'He is the only actor who can make me forget my lines — because I'm too busy watching him act. I have to physically look away from him during our scenes or I'll break character.' He said this at the audio launch of Azhagiya Kanne (2023).
