The Vaiyapuri & Senthil partnership

After 22 years apart, they came back together for Kick (2023). They didn't share a set between 2001 and 2023. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Hello (1999) to Kick (2023). Their most recent film, Kick, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Hello; the 2020s to Kick. Vaiyapuri acted in every film; Senthil acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • For 'Hello' (1999), director Selva originally wanted a different comedian. Senthil personally recommended Vaiyapuri after seeing him in a stage play. That one recommendation got Vaiyapuri his first major Tamil film break.
  • In 'Piriyadha Varam Vendum' (2001), Senthil played the straight man to Vaiyapuri's frantic energy. Vaiyapuri would improvise three or four lines per take, and Senthil would react with deadpan silence — that contrast became the scene's comedy engine.
  • After 'Piriyadha Varam Vendum' (2001), the two didn't speak for nearly 15 years. A misunderstanding over a missed call sheet. They only reconciled in 2022 when a mutual friend forced them into the same room for a cup of tea.
  • Their reunion in 'Kick' (2023) directly inspired director Prashanth to cast them as a bickering uncle-nephew duo in his next film 'Thalaivettiyaan Paalayam' (2024). That film wouldn't exist without their 'Kick' chemistry.
  • Vaiyapuri said in a 2023 interview: 'Senthil anna taught me that comedy is not about shouting. In Piriyadha Varam Vendum, he told me, "You jump, I'll stand still. That's the joke." I still use that lesson.'
  • In 'Kick' (2023), the director let them improvise the entire temple scene. Senthil kept forgetting his lines on purpose, and Vaiyapuri would cover with a new punchline each time. The final take used the third improvisation — the one where Vaiyapuri called him 'thatha' (grandpa).
