The Bharathiraja & Goundamani partnership

Between 1977 and 1982, they barely worked apart — 5 films in 5 years. For 5 years, a BharathirajaGoundamani film arrived almost every year. Remarkably even — every film rates between 7.5 and 8.4.

From Padhinaru Vayadhiniley (1977) to Valibamey Vaa Vaa (1982). Puthiya Vaarpugal (1979, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

The shape of the work

The 1970s account for 80% of everything they made together. The 1970s belonged to Padhinaru Vayadhiniley; the 1980s to Valibamey Vaa Vaa. Bharathiraja directed every film; Goundamani acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Bharathiraja didn't want Goundamani for 'Padhinaru Vayadhiniley' (1977). He thought the comedian's face was too 'rough' for a village boy role. Goundamani begged for a chance, and Bharathiraja finally gave him a small part — that film put both of them on the map.
  • On 'Kizhake Pogum Rail' (1978), Bharathiraja would give Goundamani just a one-line situation — no written dialogue. Goundamani would then improvise entire comic sequences on the spot. The director never cut him off, letting the camera roll until the comedian ran out of steam.
  • The success of 'Sigappu Rojakkal' (1978) directly led to Goundamani getting his first major solo comedy track in a non-Bharathiraja film. Before that, he was only doing bit roles. The director's faith in him changed his entire career trajectory.
  • During 'Puthiya Vaarpugal' (1979), Goundamani would arrive on set two hours early every day just to watch Bharathiraja block scenes. The director never asked him to — the comedian said he was 'learning cinema for free'.
  • In 'Valibamey Vaa Vaa' (1982), Bharathiraja deliberately cast Goundamani against type — as a serious, brooding character. The comedian was terrified. The director shot his scenes last, after everyone else had left, so Goundamani wouldn't feel self-conscious. It worked.
