The Dhanush & Vetrimaaran partnership

Remarkably even — every film rates between 7.3 and 8.0. From Polladhavan (2007) to Asuran (2019). Asuran (2019, 8.0/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

Aadukalam is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Polladhavan (2007).

The shape of the work

The 2010s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Polladhavan; the 2010s to Aadukalam. Dhanush acted in every film; Vetrimaaran directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Vetrimaaran first noticed Dhanush in a small role in 'Thulluvadho Ilamai' and decided he had to cast him. But Dhanush was already a star by then — Vetrimaaran had to convince him to say yes to 'Polladhavan' by showing him the raw script. Dhanush later said he signed it in 10 minutes.
  • On 'Aadukalam', Vetrimaaran made Dhanush drop his usual mass-hero mannerisms entirely. He forced him to speak in a thick Madurai dialect and even made him rehearse lines with real rooster fighters. Dhanush later admitted he felt 'naked' without his usual swagger — but that film won him his first National Award.
  • Their collaboration on 'Vada Chennai' directly launched the career of actor Ameer Sultan's brother, who played a key role. More importantly, the film's raw, episodic gangster style inspired a whole wave of Tamil web series — including 'Suzhal: The Vortex', which Vetrimaaran himself produced later.
  • Vetrimaaran and Dhanush have a standing rule: no phone calls during shoots. They only meet in person to discuss scenes. Dhanush once said, 'If he calls me, I know something is wrong.' That distance, they claim, keeps their work from getting too comfortable.
  • Dhanush on Vetrimaaran: 'He doesn't let me act. He makes me live the character. I hate him for it during the shoot, but I love him after the film releases.' — Dhanush at the 'Asuran' success meet, 2019.
  • For 'Asuran', Vetrimaaran deliberately cast Dhanush against his own father Sivakumar's real-life story. He made Dhanush play a 50-year-old farmer while he was only 36. Dhanush had to gain 15 kilos and learn to walk with a stoop. Vetrimaaran shot the entire film in 45 days — no retakes allowed. Dhanush said it was the most physically punishing shoot of his life.
