• Girish Karnad was already a celebrated playwright and actor in Kannada cinema when Basu Chatterjee cast him in 'Ratnadeep' (1979). Chatterjee later admitted he was nervous directing a literary giant, so he let Karnad rewrite his own Hindi dialogues — a move that made Karnad trust him completely.
• On the set of 'Apne Paraye' (1980), Chatterjee would block scenes loosely and let Karnad improvise his lines in Hindustani. Karnad’s theatrical timing gave Chatterjee’s naturalistic style a sharper edge — the film’s most famous scene, where Karnad’s character silently eats while his family argues, was entirely his idea.
• The success of 'Apne Paraye' (1980) directly led to Chatterjee casting Karnad in his next project, 'Man Pasand' (1980), but more importantly, it convinced Karnad that he could balance mainstream Hindi cinema with his art-house roots. He later credited Chatterjee for teaching him how to act for the camera instead of the stage.
• Karnad and Chatterjee never became close friends after these three films. In fact, they didn't speak for years after 'Man Pasand' (1980) flopped. Karnad later said in an interview that Chatterjee was 'too shy to call' and he was 'too proud to reach out' — a classic case of two introverts losing touch.
• Girish Karnad once said about Basu Chatterjee: 'He was the only director who let me be a writer on set. He’d say, “You know the character better than I do — just say it in your own words.” That never happened with anyone else in Bombay.'
