The director, Shashank, threw them together in a scene with no script — just a situation — and told them to figure it out. That improv chemistry got them cast as a pair again in 'Mr Joe B. Carvalho'.
• In 'Mr Joe B. Carvalho' (2014), Vijay Raaz played the straight-laced detective and Manoj Joshi played his bumbling sidekick. But on set, they swapped roles: Joshi would deliberately flub his lines to make Raaz break character, and Raaz would retaliate by adding deadpan pauses that threw Joshi off. The director kept the camera rolling through both.
• Their third film together, 'Mr Black Mr White' (2019), was a surprise hit in small-town Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Its success directly led to a wave of low-budget buddy comedies in Bhojpuri cinema — at least three knockoffs with 'Black' and 'White' in the title were released in 2020 alone.
• Between shoots, Vijay Raaz and Manoj Joshi would sit in the vanity van and play chess — but only in silence. Joshi once told a crew member that talking would 'break the game's rhythm'. They never discussed the films during those games. It was their way of resetting before a scene.
• Manoj Joshi said in a 2019 interview: 'Vijay and I don't need to rehearse. We just look at each other and know who will be the fool in this scene. Usually it's me.'
