The Naseeruddin Shah & Dev Anand partnership

After 20 years apart, they came back together for Chargesheet (2011). They didn't share a set between 1991 and 2011. Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema.

From Swami Dada (1982) to Chargesheet (2011). It started with Swami Dada (1982).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Swami Dada; the 2010s to Chargesheet. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Dev Anand personally called Naseeruddin Shah to offer him the role in Swami Dada (1982). Naseer was surprised — he was known as a serious theatre actor, and Dev was the ultimate mainstream star. Naseer later said he took the role just to watch Dev work up close.
  • On the set of Swami Dada, Dev Anand would rehearse his lines out loud while walking in circles. Naseeruddin Shah found this distracting at first, then started using Dev's rhythm to time his own reactions. He later admitted it taught him how to act with a star who doesn't stop moving.
  • After Sau Crore (1991) flopped, Dev Anand called Naseeruddin Shah and apologized — said he'd let his own enthusiasm override the script's weaknesses. Naseer told him not to worry, that he'd do another film with him anytime. They didn't work together again for 20 years.
  • Naseeruddin Shah once said about Dev Anand: 'He was the only person I've worked with who could make a bad line sound like a profound truth — just by the way he said it with total conviction.'
  • Their last film together, Chargesheet (2011), was Dev Anand's final directorial venture. Naseer signed on without reading the full script — just because Dev asked. The film bombed, but it gave Dev one last chance to direct a National Award-winning actor before he passed away later that year.
