• They first shared screen space in Hawalaat (1987), a prison-break drama where both played inmates. The film was a rare mid-80s pairing of two rising stars who usually led their own movies — neither was the clear hero, which made the casting a gamble.
• In Hawalaat, Rishi played the volatile, impulsive prisoner while Mithun was the calm, strategic one. Their scenes worked because Mithun slowed down the pace and let Rishi’s energy bounce off him — a rhythm they never quite recaptured in their later, louder comedies.
• Despite making only three films across 27 years, they remained warm off-screen. Mithun once said in an interview that Rishi was one of the few co-stars who never treated him like a ‘rival’ — a big deal in the competitive 80s.
