Partnership facts

• Balki cast Amitabh in Cheeni Kum (2007) without a formal meeting. He just sent the script. Amitabh read it in one sitting and called him back within hours to say yes. That phone call started their entire partnership.
• For Paa (2009), Balki made Amitabh play a 13-year-old boy with progeria. Amitabh had to unlearn every acting habit he had — no baritone, no towering presence. Balki literally told him on set: 'Forget you are Amitabh Bachchan.' That film became a hit.
• Because of Paa, Balki convinced Amitabh to produce and star in a film about a rare disease. That film directly led to the formation of the 'Amitabh Bachchan Progeria Research Fund' — a real charity that still exists. No other director-actor pair has launched a medical fund from a movie.
• On the sets of Shamitabh (2015), Amitabh and Balki had a running joke: Balki would call 'Action' and Amitabh would deliberately deliver his first line in a whisper, just to mess with the sound guy. Balki never got mad — he said it kept the crew alert.
• Balki once said: 'With Amitabh, I don't direct. I just suggest. He already knows what the scene needs. My job is to not get in his way.' He said this during the promotion of Shamitabh.
