Flight to Delhi turns deadly

A plane takes off from Chennai. Everyone is relaxed. Passengers chat, read, and sleep. Then five passengers walk to the toilet. They come back with guns and knives. The hijack begins.

Full Plot

The film opens with a routine flight from Chennai to Delhi. Five passengers retrieve weapons from the toilet and hijack the plane. They fight the pilots and damage the engine. The plane makes an emergency landing at Tirupati Airport. Officials on the ground learn about the hijack and alert the government.

Home Secretary K. Vishwanath leads the crisis response. Major N. Raveendra, called Ravi, is a top NSG commando. He once captured the terrorist leader Yusuf Khan, but his colleague died in that mission. Ravi wants to launch a commando raid immediately. Vishwanath hesitates, fearing for the passengers' lives.

The hijackers demand ₹100 crore and the release of Yusuf Khan. Inside the plane, passengers try to stay calm. A retired colonel named Jagadheesh keeps asking the hijackers questions. A drug addict named Praveen attempts to escape but is shot dead. A young girl named Afshana, returning from a heart operation, becomes attached to one hijacker.

Ravi and his colleague Nawaz track down a cleaner who hid the weapons. They learn the weapon is a plastic explosive. The government decides to release Khan, but he dies in an avalanche in Kashmir. Ravi keeps this secret. He brings an actor who played Khan in a film to pretend Khan is alive.

A reporter leaks Khan's death on TV. The hijackers see it. Their leader Yasin kills a passenger named Subash and throws his body out. He threatens to kill one person every 30 minutes. Ravi sends a phone hidden in food to Colonel Jagadheesh. Jagadheesh gives him details about the hijackers and their weapons.

Ravi plans Operation Garuda. He tells passengers to bend down when they hear a church bell. During the transfer to a new plane, commandos attack. Four hijackers are killed. The last one is killed by two passengers. The plastic explosive is found in Afshana's bag. Ravi drives it away in a jeep and jumps out just before it explodes. All passengers are rescued. The mission is a success.

Courage in crisis

Ordinary passengers show extraordinary bravery. Colonel Jagadheesh keeps asking questions despite the danger. Two passengers help kill the last hijacker. The film shows that courage is not about being fearless. It is about doing the right thing even when you are scared.

Government vs military

The film shows the conflict between cautious politicians and action-ready soldiers. Vishwanath wants to negotiate to save lives. Ravi wants to attack before it is too late. This tension drives much of the plot. In the end, both sides must work together.

Humanity in small moments

Inside the plane, passengers share their lives, religion, and fears. A hijacker becomes attached to a little girl. These small human moments make the story feel real. They remind us that even in terror, people connect.

Media responsibility

A reporter leaks sensitive information about Khan's death. This causes the hijackers to kill a passenger. The film criticizes how media can endanger lives. It shows the importance of responsible reporting during a crisis.

How does it end?

Ending Explained

The ending of 'Payanam' is a full-action rescue sequence. Ravi's plan, Operation Garuda, works perfectly. The commandos kill four hijackers during the transfer to a new plane. The last hijacker is killed by two brave passengers. Then the bomb squad searches the plane but finds nothing. Ravi realizes the plastic explosive is hidden in a passenger's bag. It is in Afshana's bag, given to her by a hijacker as a 'gift'. Ravi takes the bomb, drives it away in a jeep, and jumps out just before it explodes. The explosion destroys the jeep but hurts no one. All passengers are safe. They hug each other and promise to meet again. Vishwanath and the Prime Minister appreciate Ravi. The film ends with a sense of relief and hope. The message is clear: courage and teamwork can overcome even the darkest threats.
