Mahalakshmi, called Maha by everyone, works as a servant in the home of Amritavalli, an elderly woman in Pazhani. The family treats her kindly, but she still does all the housework. Maha is a very devoted follower of Lord Murugan. She lives close to the famous Palani Murugan temple but cannot visit it because of her work. One night, she has a vivid dream where she is getting married to a man whose face she cannot see.

The next morning, a young man named Mano Ramalingam arrives at the house. He is Amritavalli's grandson from the city. Maha recognizes him from her dream. Mano falls in love with Maha almost immediately. He is charming and kind. He promises her that he will marry her. Maha is heartbroken. She goes to the Murugan temple and cries in anger. She tells Lord Murugan that she will never face him again. She throws away her prayer items. Her faith is shattered. She feels completely alone. Meanwhile, a new cook named Saravanan arrives at the house. He is hired by a local man named Madhava Gounder. Everyone loves Saravanan's cooking.
