Moodupani(1980)
Moodupani (English: The Mist) is a 1980 Indian Tamil-language psychological thriller film written, directed, and filmed by Balu Mahendra. It stars Pratap Pothen as Chandru, a serial killer of prostitutes, and Shoba as Rekha, the woman he kidnaps. The supporting cast includes N. Viswanathan, Gandhimathi, Mohan, and Bhanu Chander. The story follows Chandru, whose childhood trauma leads him to murder women he considers immoral, and his obsessive pursuit of Rekha. The film is based on two novels: Idhuvum Oru Viduthalai Thaan by Rajendra Kumar and The Collector by John Fowles. It is noted for its similarities to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and its atmospheric cinematography shot in Udupi, Bangalore, and Ooty. The soundtrack, composed by Ilaiyaraaja for his 100th film, features the hit song Yen Iniya Pon Nilavae. Moodupani received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, running for over 200 days in theatres. It was released on 6 November 1980 during the Diwali holiday frame.

Storyline
A wealthy businessman with a traumatic childhood develops an uncontrollable hatred for prostitutes and begins killing them. When he falls in love with a kind woman, he believes marriage will cure his rage. But when she refuses him, he kidnaps her and holds her captive in a remote bungalow. A police inspector races to uncover the killer's identity before it is too late.
