
Mullum Malarum(1978)
'Mullum Malarum' (1978) is a Tamil-language drama film written and directed by J. Mahendran in his directorial debut. It stars Rajinikanth, Sarath Babu, Jayalaxmi, and Shoba. The story follows Kali, a winch operator in a hilltop village, who dotes on his sister Valli and clashes with his new boss Kumaran. The film is partly based on Uma Chandran's novel of the same name. It was shot primarily in Sringeri, Karnataka, and Ooty, Tamil Nadu, over about 30 days. The cinematography by Balu Mahendra and music by Ilaiyaraaja received widespread acclaim. 'Mullum Malarum' won the Filmfare Award for Best Film – Tamil and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film. It was released on 15 August 1978 and became a commercial success after positive word of mouth.

Storyline
Kali, a hot-tempered winch operator, lives with his sister Valli in a hilltop village. He gives free rides on his cable trolley to poor villagers, which angers his new boss Kumaran. When Kali's negligence endangers a child, Kumaran suspends him. A tragic accident costs Kali his arm, and he loses his job. As Kumaran falls in love with Valli, Kali's pride and possessiveness threaten to tear his family apart.
