Partnership facts

• Rajinikanth was still a bus conductor-turned-actor finding his footing when Venniradai Moorthy — already a veteran character actor — agreed to share screen space with him in Gaayathri (1977). Moorthy later said he took the role because he saw something raw in the newcomer that reminded him of his own early struggles.
• In Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram (1977), Moorthy played a stern father opposite Rajinikanth's rebellious son. The tension in their scenes came from a real power imbalance: Moorthy, a stage veteran, deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery to force Rajini to react with his eyes rather than his lines — a trick that taught Rajini how to act without speaking.
• On the sets of Thanikattu Raja (1982), Moorthy would bring homemade snacks for the crew every single day. Rajinikanth later admitted he started sitting next to Moorthy during lunch breaks just to get first dibs on the murukku — and that's how their off-screen friendship really began.
• "Moorthy sir never let me get away with a lazy take. He'd stop mid-scene and say, 'Thambi, that was not real. Do it again.' I learned more from him than from any acting school." — Rajinikanth, in a 1992 interview with Ananda Vikatan.
• Their last film together, Dharma Dorai (1991), was the only one where Moorthy played a comic sidekick rather than a father figure. That shift — from stern patriarch to comic relief — directly inspired director K. S. Ravikumar to cast Moorthy as the funny uncle in later Rajini hits like Muthu (1995).
