
Ethir Neechal(1968)
Ethir Neechal is a 1968 Indian Tamil-language comedy drama film written and directed by K. Balachander. The ensemble cast includes Nagesh, Muthuraman, Sundarrajan, Srikanth, Sowcar Janaki, and Jayanthi. The story follows Maadhu, a destitute orphan who performs odd jobs for tenants in a multi-family building in exchange for shelter and food. He falls in love with Paaru, a woman rejected by her fiancé due to rumors about her mental health. The film explores themes of kindness, greed, and social prejudice. It was based on Balachander's own stage play, which was inspired by Sombhu Mitra's play Kanchanranga. Ethir Neechal was released on 12 December 1968 and became a commercial success. Balachander won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Dialogue Writer. The film was remade in Telugu as Sambarala Rambabu (1970) and in Hindi as Lakhon Me Ek (1971).

Storyline
Maadhu is a poor orphan who lives under the staircase of a crowded house. He runs errands for the selfish tenants in exchange for food and shelter. When a girl named Paaru moves in, Maadhu falls in love with her. But everyone thinks Paaru is crazy. Maadhu must fight against gossip and greed to win her love.
