Trivia
- The film was inspired by the 1981 American movie 'Only When I Laugh', which itself was based on a Neil Simon play.
- This was the final film directed by Raj Khosla, a veteran known for thrillers and dramas, before his death in 1991.
- Actor Rishi Kapoor, who played the adult Sunny, was in his early 30s but portrayed a character much younger, starting from his late teens.
- The movie's music, composed by R.D. Burman, featured the popular romantic song 'Sunny Sunny' sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.
- Despite its dramatic plot, the film was not a major commercial success upon its initial release.
- Actress Amrita Singh, who played the young lover Sheetal, was a relatively new star, having debuted just two years earlier.
- The story's central conflict revolves around a legal and moral issue of the time: the rights of a biological mother versus an adoptive one.
