Marimuthu is a poor goat herder in the village of Kanakkanpatti near Palani. He lost his father at age 13 and had to stop his education. He plays kabaddi very well. His friends are Ayyappan, Sekar, Murthy, Appukutty, Subramani, and Pandi. They form a team called Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. The team is famous for never winning a match. Sekar is the rich, short-tempered team captain. Appukutty owns a tea shop and is scolded by his mother-in-law. Subramani is a newlywed who loves eating, playing kabaddi, and his wife. Pandi runs a local store and is the son of an ex-army man.

During the village festival, Marimuthu meets a beautiful young woman. He flirts with her and they develop a connection. The team organizes a friendly kabaddi match with the neighboring village. Savadamuthu, the coach of the state's best team, is the chief guest. He notices their raw talent. Later, the team goes to Madurai for a state-level tournament. Their district team forfeits, so they get to play as the Dindigul district team.
