A road trip gone wrong

Four friends pile into an old Volkswagen van. They are heading to Hyderabad to watch a cricket match. A huge tanker overturns on the highway, blocking the road. They decide to take a shortcut through a dark forest. That decision changes everything. A wounded man falls onto their car from above.

Full Plot

Saroja begins with four close friends in Chennai: Ajay Raj, a TV actor; Ganesh Kumar, a romantic engineering student; Jagapathi Babu, a married engineer; and Rambabu, Jagapathi's younger brother. Ram is in love with Pooja, but she falls for Ajay instead. Ajay and Pooja get engaged, leaving Ram heartbroken. He quickly gets over it and remains friends with everyone. One day, the four decide to drive to Hyderabad in Ajay's old Volkswagen van to watch a cricket match.

Meanwhile, in Hyderabad, business tycoon Vishwanath is too busy for his wife and teenage daughter Saroja. A gang kidnaps Saroja, and Vishwanath's friend ACP Ravichandhan handles the case. On the highway, a tanker carrying flammable chemicals overturns, causing a massive traffic jam. The four friends take a shortcut through a forest. There, an injured man named R. Venkatraman falls onto their car. Jagapathi wants to help him, but Venkatraman warns them to run. A jeep full of gangsters arrives and shoots Venkatraman dead. The gang leader, Sampath Kumar, orders his men to kill the two friends who saw everything.

Ajay and Jagapathi run for their lives while Ganesh and Ram search for help in an abandoned factory. They all get separated. Ganesh finds Saroja tied up in a room and frees her. He tries to impress her with his charm. The other three get captured by the gang. Sampath demands ransom from Vishwanath. Kalyani, Sampath's girlfriend, tells him that Saroja has escaped. Sampath sends all his men to find her, leaving only one guard. Ram attacks and kills the guard, freeing himself and the others.

The friends find Ganesh and Saroja, but they are soon trapped in a building with only one entrance. Jagapathi builds a Rube Goldberg machine using pipes and barrels as weapons. They set the trap and escape during the chaos. They reach a railway station, where Vishwanath and Ravichandran are waiting for the ransom exchange. Saroja runs to her father. But Ravichandran pulls a gun on her. A flashback reveals that Ravichandran and Sampath are old friends who planned the kidnapping because they were jealous of Vishwanath's wealth.

Vishwanath shoots and kills Ravichandran. Saroja is safe. The four friends return home. In the van, they try to remember the girl's name but cannot. They laugh and keep guessing. The film ends with their friendship intact, stronger than ever.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, Saroja is not based on a true story. It is inspired by the 1993 American film Judgement Night. Director Venkat Prabhu took the basic idea of friends taking a wrong turn and facing criminals. He added his own comedy and Tamil cultural touches to make it fresh.

The role of Saroja is played by actress Vega Tamotia. She is the teenage daughter of millionaire Vishwanath. Vega was praised for her performance, especially for looking natural and scared in the tense scenes.

A Rube Goldberg machine is a complex device that performs a simple task through a chain reaction. In Saroja, Jagapathi builds one using pipes, barrels, and ropes in the factory. When triggered, it causes explosions and falls that help the friends escape the gangsters.

A sequel was announced in August 2016. It was supposed to be directed by Venkat Prabhu's assistant Skantha Priyan. Actors S. J. Suryah, Premji, and VTV Ganesh were reported to play the lead roles. But as of now, the sequel has not been released.

The ending is a comedic moment showing that the friends are more focused on their bond than on the girl they saved. They went through so much danger and excitement that the small details slip their minds. It is a lighthearted way to end a tense film, reminding us that their friendship is the real story.
