Full Plot

The story is set in 2005 in Paruthiyur, a village near Madurai. Caste segregation is still practiced. Paruthiveeran, called Paruthi, is a wild young man. His father was a rich upper-caste Agamudayar who married a low-caste Kurava woman. The village ostracized them. After his parents died, Paruthi was raised by his maternal uncle Chevvaazhai and his grandmother. Chevvaazhai spoils him and joins him in every mischief. Paruthi grows up among his mother's people. He is often arrested for petty crimes. His only ambition is to become notorious enough to be on the news and get thrown into Madras Jail. He bullies villagers for money and fun.

Muththazhagu is Paruthi's paternal cousin. Her father Kazhuvathevan Servai is a respected, caste-obsessed man. Muththazhagu has loved Paruthi since childhood. When they were children, Paruthi saved her from drowning in a well. She promised to marry him and be by his side forever. She loves him against her parents' will. To delay her marriage to someone else, she purposely fails her school exams. Paruthi is often violent towards her, but she still loves him. Eventually, Paruthi accepts her love and decides to marry her.

Paruthi goes to Kazhuvathevan's house to formally ask for Muththazhagu's hand. Kazhuvathevan shames him and throws him out. In the fight that follows, Paruthi threatens to cut Muththazhagu into pieces if she marries anyone else. Her parents ignore the threat and plan her marriage to a boy of their choice. Muththazhagu cannot convince them. She runs away from home to elope with Paruthi.

While waiting in an abandoned building, four of Paruthi's acquaintances find her. They mistake her for one of his prostitutes. They brutally gang rape her and leave her to die. Paruthi returns to find her dying from bleeding. She begs him to cut her into pieces so no one sees her in that state. Then she dies. Paruthi tries to carry her out, but sees her family approaching. He locks the door from inside. In his madness, he chops her body up. He runs out holding the pieces, screaming that he will not let her marry anyone else. Kazhuvathevan and his men see the mutilated body. They beat Paruthi brutally. As he breathes his last, his time with Muththazhagu flashes before his eyes.

The cost of rebellion

Paruthiveeran rebels against every rule. He wants to be a criminal. He refuses to follow caste norms. But his rebellion comes at a huge cost. He loses the woman he loves and dies a brutal death. The film asks if rebellion is worth the price.

Tragedy of miscommunication
