Jalpari: The Desert Mermaid is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language children's adventure drama directed by Nila Madhab Panda. It follows two city siblings who visit their father's drought-stricken ancestral village in Haryana and uncover a secret graveyard of unborn baby girls, revealing the community's practice of female foeticide. It won the MIP Junior Kids Jury Award at Cannes and was submitted as India's entry for the Academy Awards in the foreign language category. Storyline
Two city kids, Shreya and Sam, travel to their father's dusty ancestral village expecting a paradise. Instead, they find a dry, hostile place where everyone fears a witch. But when Shreya follows the maid one night, she discovers the witch is a lie hiding a horrifying truth about the village's missing girls.
