He made his directorial debut with Senathipathi (1996), a rural caste drama starring Sathyaraj in a dual role, produced by Malar Films with music by Deva. His career trajectory began with significant work as an assistant director, most prominently under the mentorship of acclaimed director S. Shankar on the blockbuster 'Enthiran' (Robot), which provided him a foundational understanding of large-scale filmmaking and technical precision. Rathnakumar made his directorial debut with 'Meyaadha Maan' (2017), a fresh take on urban relationships and career struggles that was praised for its realistic dialogue, relatable characters, and effective blend of humor and heart. The film established his ability to connect with youth audiences. His major breakthrough came with the action thriller 'LKG' (2019), a sharp political satire centered on the rise of a cunning politician. The film was noted for its timely commentary, witty writing, and engaging pace, cementing his reputation as a filmmaker with a keen eye for socio-political themes packaged as mass entertainment. His subsequent film, 'Mudhal Nee Mudivum Nee' (2022), marked a stylistic shift—a poignant, music-driven coming-of-age period drama set in the 1990s.
