Biography

Samy is an Indian Tamil film director and screenwriter who began his career assisting directors Balu Mahendra and S. A. Chandrasekar before writing dialogue for the 2001 film Dost. He made his directorial debut with Uyir (2006), followed by Mirugam (2007), which dealt with a cruel villager suffering from HIV and generated controversy both for its content and an on-set incident involving actress Padmapriya that led to a temporary industry ban. His third film, Sindhu Samaveli (2010), was an erotic thriller that received an adults-only certificate, while later works Kangaroo (2015) and Akka Kuruvi (2022) — a Tamil remake of the 1997 Iranian film Children of Heaven — marked a shift toward family-oriented cinema. Across his five-film career, Samy is noted for tackling socially provocative and taboo subjects, with Akka Kuruvi featuring music drawn from the classical compositions of Ilaiyaraaja.
