Biography

Raj Nidimoru is an Indian-American filmmaker, director, screenwriter, and producer who works in Hindi cinema as one half of the celebrated director duo Raj & DK, alongside his university friend Krishna D.K. The duo broke into mainstream Bollywood with 99 (2009), followed by the sleeper hit Shor in the City (2011) and Go Goa Gone (2013), India's first zombie horror-comedy starring Saif Ali Khan. Their distinctive style blends genre subversion with sharp, unconventional storytelling — writing 99, Shor in the City, and Go Goa Gone simultaneously as a deliberate strategy to ensure at least one would get produced. After Happy Ending (2014) and A Gentleman (2017), Raj & DK transitioned to OTT dominance with Amazon Prime series The Family Man, Farzi, Guns & Gulaabs, and Citadel: Honey Bunny.

Legacy & Influence

Raj Nidimoru, along with his creative partner Krishna D.K., has been a transformative force in modern Indian cinema, pioneering a distinct brand of quirky, genre-blending storytelling that broke from traditional Bollywood formulas. Their journey began with the cult hit 'Flavors' (2003), an early example of urban, multiplex-friendly cinema. They solidified their reputation with the groundbreaking zombie comedy 'Go Goa Gone' (2013), India's first major film in that genre, which demonstrated their ability to successfully import and adapt Western concepts for an Indian audience with sharp wit and stylistic flair. This established them as masters of the high-concept comedy. Their most significant contribution, however, is arguably the creation of the cinematic universe for the acclaimed Amazon Prime Video series 'The Family Man' (2019-present). Co-creating, writing, and directing the show, they redefined the Indian espionage thriller by grounding it in the relatable domestic life of a middle-class man, blending intense action with humor and emotional depth, and setting a new benchmark for Indian streaming content. Their filmography, including 'Shor in the City' (2011), 'Happy Ending' (2014), and the global Netflix hit 'Extraction' (2020) which they co-wrote, consistently showcases a technical polish, narrative efficiency, and a focus on contemporary, globalized Indian characters. The duo, collectively known as Raj & D.K., have built a production house (D2R Indie) that champions this specific vision. Their legacy lies in expanding the tonal and genre palette of mainstream Indian entertainment, proving that stories can be both commercially viable and critically respected by being clever, fast-paced, and internationally aware, thereby influencing a new wave of filmmakers and showrunners working in streaming and film.
