Mass Intro
Also called: intro scene, intro shot
The mass intro is the first on-screen appearance of the lead actor in a South Indian mass film, structured as a self-contained set piece designed to land as a theatrical event. Conventional ingredients include a delayed reveal (the hero's face is withheld for as long as possible), slow-motion entry, a swelling score cue, a costume reveal, and often a punch dialogue or signature gesture. Audiences anticipate the mass intro the way an opera audience anticipates an aria — applause and whistling are expected, and the marketing for the film often previews fragments of the intro to set the appetite. The mass intro is technically a subset of hero elevation, but it carries special weight because it establishes the film's tone and the star's mode for the rest of the runtime. In recent years the convention has been parodied, subverted, and sometimes restructured, but rarely abandoned.
