• Vinod Mehra was the one who pushed for S. Ramanathan to direct 'Love in Canada' (1979). Ramanathan was a Tamil director with no Hindi hits yet. Mehra bet on him after seeing his Tamil work.
• On the set of 'Kahani Ek Chor Ki' (1981), Ramanathan let Mehra rewrite his own dialogues in Hindi. Mehra’s Hindustani was sharper than the scripted lines, so Ramanathan just told him, 'You say it your way.'
• After 'Dial 100' (1982) wrapped, Ramanathan and Mehra never spoke again. No fight — just drifted. Mehra died suddenly in 1990. Ramanathan later said in an interview he regretted not calling him once after the film.
• Ramanathan once said about Mehra: 'He was the only actor who would come to my room at night and ask, “Sir, is this scene really working?” He cared more than the heroines did.'
• Their third film 'Dial 100' (1982) was one of the earliest Hindi films to use a telephone exchange as a plot device. A decade later, Ram Gopal Varma cited it as an influence for his own phone-based thriller 'Shiva' (1990).
