Partnership facts

• Pran and Ranjeet first shared screen space in 'Lalach' (1983) because the director, Kewal Sharma, needed a villain who could match Pran's intensity. Ranjeet was cast as the younger, more volatile antagonist — a role he got only after Pran personally vouched for him to the producer.
• In 'Maa Kasam' (1985), Pran played the righteous father while Ranjeet was the scheming son-in-law. Ranjeet later admitted that Pran deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery in their confrontation scene to make Ranjeet's anger look more explosive by contrast.
• Despite playing bitter rivals on screen, Pran and Ranjeet shared a quiet ritual: before every scene together, Pran would pat Ranjeet on the back and say, 'Chal, bachche, dikha de.' Ranjeet kept this habit up even after Pran retired.
• Their only hit together, 'Bhagyawan' (1993), was the last film Pran ever signed as a villain. Ranjeet later said that working with Pran in that film convinced him to shift from negative roles to character parts — a move that extended his own career by another decade.
• Ranjeet once told a film magazine: 'Pran sahab taught me that a villain doesn't shout to be scary. He just has to stand still and let the silence do the work. I learned that in 'Lalach' and used it for the rest of my life.'
