• In Phir Wohi Raat (1980), Hangal played a blind man and Shivpuri played a doctor. Hangal later said Shivpuri’s calm, clinical delivery actually helped him stay in character — because Shivpuri never broke eye contact, which made Hangal feel like he was really being examined.
• Hangal was a veteran theatre actor from IPTA; Shivpuri was a National School of Drama graduate. On the sets of Prem Bandhan (1979), they bonded over their shared disdain for over-the-top acting. They’d sit in a corner and mock the melodramatic takes of younger actors.
• They first met on the set of Prem Bandhan (1979) because the director, B. R. Ishara, deliberately cast two theatre veterans to anchor a film full of newcomers. Ishara told them: 'You two keep the film honest while the kids act.'
• Satyamev Jayate (1987) was the last film they made together. It flopped hard, but the film’s villain — played by a young Shakti Kapoor — got noticed because both Hangal and Shivpuri refused to overplay their roles, forcing Kapoor to dial down his usual hamminess. Kapoor later credited them for teaching him restraint.
• Om Shivpuri once said in an interview: 'A. K. Hangal could make a line about tea sound like a confession. I learned to listen on screen because of him.'
