• Radha was just 16 when she starred opposite Silk Smitha in Alaigal Oivathillai (1981). Silk was already a bold name. The director, Bharathiraja, deliberately paired them to create a contrast — innocent girl vs. experienced woman — and it worked like magic.
• In Thudikkum Karangal (1983), Silk Smitha played a vamp who tries to seduce Radha’s hero. But off-screen, Silk reportedly coached Radha on how to hold her own in emotional scenes. Radha later said Silk taught her to cry on cue without glycerin.
• Despite playing rivals on screen, Radha and Silk were close friends. Radha once revealed that Silk would bring her homemade biryani to sets and they’d eat together between shots. After Silk’s death in 1996, Radha refused to discuss her for years — it hit her that hard.
• Radha said in a 2018 interview: 'Silk akka was the only co-star who never treated me like a competitor. She’d say, “You shine, I’ll shine too.” That’s rare in this industry.'
• Their pairing in Vellai Roja (1983) was so popular that the film’s producer immediately greenlit a second project with them — Thudikkum Karangal — just months later. That film’s success then led to a third, Ayiram Muthangal (1982), being re-released in theaters.
• Pickpocket (1989) was their last film together — and it almost didn’t happen. Radha had taken a break from acting, but Silk personally called her and said, 'One more film, for old times.' Radha agreed without even reading the script.
