• Ashvin Raja was a first-time director when he cast Thambi Ramaiah in Kumki (2012). He wrote the role of 'Kali' specifically for him after watching his comic timing in a stage play. Thambi almost said no because the character was too serious — Ashvin convinced him by showing a rough cut of the elephant scenes.
• On the sets of Nedunchaalai (2014), Thambi Ramaiah would rewrite his own dialogues in the morning and Ashvin Raja would approve them on the spot. Ashvin later said Thambi's improvisations made the village scenes feel like real conversations, not scripted lines.
