• In Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998), Anupam Kher and Seema Biswas played mother and son — but they are almost the same age. Kher was 43, Biswas was 33. The casting worked because Biswas’s raw intensity made her feel older, and Kher leaned into a childlike vulnerability he rarely showed elsewhere.
• On the set of Striker (2010), Kher told Biswas he wanted her to improvise her lines in the courtroom scene. She rewrote her monologue in one take, and Kher — playing the judge — stayed silent for a full 40 seconds on camera, just reacting with his eyes. The director kept that silence in the final cut.
• After Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa wrapped, Kher sent Biswas a handwritten note that said: “You made me forget I was acting.” She still has it. Years later, when they met for Yeh Mera India (2009), she showed him the note — he didn’t remember writing it.
