Long-Term Partnership

The Sriman & Sangeetha partnership

After 13 years apart, they came back together for Varisu (2023). They didn't share a set between 2010 and 2023. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Nayagan (2008) to Varisu (2023). Their most recent film, Varisu, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Nayagan; the 2020s to Varisu. Sriman acted in every film; Sangeetha acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Sriman and Sangeetha first shared screen space in Nayagan (2008), but they didn't have a single scene together. Their characters never met. The director, Selvaraghavan, cast them in separate tracks — Sriman played the hero's friend, Sangeetha played a supporting role. They only properly acted opposite each other in Manmadhan Ambu (2010).
  • In Manmadhan Ambu (2010), Sriman played a bumbling sidekick to Kamal Haasan's character, while Sangeetha played a sharp, no-nonsense woman. Their comedy came from Sriman's character constantly messing up and Sangeetha's character reacting with deadpan irritation. Sangeetha later said she had to hold back her laughter in multiple takes because Sriman kept improvising silly expressions.
  • Sriman and Sangeetha have been close friends since Nayagan (2008), even though they barely worked together in that film. Sangeetha once revealed in an interview that Sriman was the first person she called when she got nervous before a big scene — and he would calm her down by cracking jokes over the phone.
  • Sangeetha said about Sriman in a 2011 interview: 'He is the only co-star who can make me laugh even when I'm angry. On the sets of Manmadhan Ambu, I'd be in character as this serious woman, and he'd whisper something silly and I'd break. Kamal sir would just shake his head.'
  • Their pairing in Varisu (2023) was a surprise reunion after 13 years. The film's director, Vamshi Paidipally, specifically wrote their characters as a married couple because he remembered their easy comic timing from Manmadhan Ambu. That decision led to a minor trend — two other Tamil films that year cast actors who had previously played friends as married couples.
