• Santhana Bharathi and Subbu Panchu Arunachalam first teamed up because of a shared love for old-school whodunits. Santhana had written a script inspired by the 1986 classic 'Samsaram Adhu Minsaram', and Subbu — who had never directed before — agreed to co-direct only if they could shoot it in 30 days. They finished 'Chennaiyil Oru Naal' in 28.
• On set, Santhana handled the actors and the emotional beats, while Subbu controlled the camera and the pacing. Subbu once said in an interview: 'I’d frame the shot, he’d tell me if the actor was lying. We never argued — we just swapped chairs.'
• Their second film 'Chennai 600028 II: Second Innings' directly launched the career of actor Jai — who had a small role in the first film but was pushed to the lead by both directors after they saw his improv during a cricket scene. Jai later credited this duo for 'teaching me how to act without acting'.
• They had a standing rule: no phone calls after 9 PM. If one of them had an idea late at night, they’d text it and the other would reply only the next morning. Subbu said it saved their friendship — 'We never fought because we never talked tired.'
• Subbu Panchu Arunachalam, on why they stopped making films together after 'RK Nagar': 'We didn't fall out. We just ran out of stories that needed both of us. Some friendships are best when they don't overstay.'
