• For Attakathi (2012), Pa. Ranjit was a first-time director with no connections. He spotted Kalaiyarasan at a theatre workshop and cast him on the spot — no audition, no screen test. Kalai said yes before even reading the full script.
• On the sets of Madras (2014), Ranjit would give Kalaiyarasan only a one-line scene description and let him improvise the entire dialogue. The result? That iconic 'North Madras' rant — which Kalai wrote himself in 20 minutes between shots.
• Because Kalaiyarasan played the antagonist in Madras, Ranjit trusted him to play a key supporting role in Kabali (2016) — which became a 250+ crore blockbuster. That film directly launched Kalai into the big league, and he later credited Ranjit for 'changing his life' in a 2017 interview.
