• They first met on the set of Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014) because the director, A. L. Vijay, specifically wanted two comedians who could play off each other without dialogue — the film's gimmick was that no one could speak. Kaali Venkat and Robo Shankar were cast as a pair of mute sidekicks, and their silent physical comedy became the film's most talked-about element.
• In Maari (2015), Robo Shankar played the hyperactive, loud sidekick while Kaali Venkat played the deadpan, weary foil. The trick was that Robo would set the pace with rapid-fire nonsense, and Kaali would slow it down with a single look — that rhythm became their signature in every film after.
• Their double-act in Irumbu Thirai (2018) was so popular that the film's producer, S. Thanu, greenlit a standalone comedy track featuring just the two of them — it ran for 12 minutes in the final cut, longer than the romantic subplot. That track directly inspired the 2020 hit Kanni Rasi, which was built entirely around their pairing.
• On the sets of Aalambana (2023), the two shared a single vanity van because the production budget was tight. They ended up writing alternate dialogues for each other's scenes every night — Robo would scribble lines on napkins, Kaali would rewrite them in Tamil on the back of call sheets. The director kept most of those napkin lines in the final film.
• Robo Shankar once said in a 2023 interview: 'Kaali is the only actor who can make me laugh without opening his mouth. I do all the talking, he does all the acting — that's our deal.'
