• Rekha was just 25 and already a star when she played Ashok Kumar's wife in Khubsoorat (1980). He was 68. The age gap was so huge that the director, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, had to rewrite the entire script to make the pairing believable — he turned their romance into a playful, almost father-daughter dynamic.
• On the sets of Judaai (1980), Ashok Kumar would deliberately flub his lines to make Rekha laugh. She later said his comic timing was so sharp that she couldn't keep a straight face — and those genuine giggles made it into the final cut.
• Ashok Kumar was the one who taught Rekha how to handle the press. During the making of Khubsoorat, he'd pull her aside after interviews and point out which questions were traps. She called him her 'schoolmaster' on set.
• Rekha once said about Ashok Kumar: 'He was the only co-star who could make me forget the camera. With him, I wasn't acting — I was just reacting.'
• Their pairing in Khubsoorat (1980) directly inspired the 1999 hit 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' — the producers wanted the same warm, multi-generational family vibe that Rekha and Ashok Kumar had created. That film went on to define the 'family drama' genre for a decade.
• Clerk (1989) was their third and final film together — and it bombed so badly that both of them later admitted they only signed it as a favour to a mutual friend. Rekha called it 'the film we don't talk about' in a 1990 interview.
