Partnership facts

• Jaishankar was already a star when he agreed to do Unnaithan Thambi (1974), but he insisted on R. Vittal as the director. Vittal was a newcomer then. Jaishankar saw his short film and bet his career on him.
• On the sets of Thottadhellam Ponnaagum (1975), Jaishankar would rewrite his own dialogues in the morning. Vittal would then re-block the entire scene around those lines. They worked like a two-man improv troupe — no one else touched the script.
• Mudisooda Mannan (1978) was the first Tamil film to use a live elephant in a fight sequence. The elephant belonged to a temple. Vittal convinced the mahout to let Jaishankar ride it. That scene became a template for every 'hero vs elephant' stunt in 80s Tamil cinema.
• After Mudisooda Mannan flopped, Vittal went into depression. Jaishankar quietly paid off the film's debts from his own pocket. They never made another film together. But Vittal later said Jaishankar never once brought up the money.
• R. Vittal once told a magazine: 'Jaishankar didn't just act in my films. He taught me how to frame a close-up. I learned cinema from him, not film school.'
