• Mahesh Bhatt cast Manisha Koirala in Criminal (1994) after seeing her in the Tamil film Bombay. He needed an actress who could play both vulnerability and grit — and he bet on her despite her limited Hindi at the time.
• On the set of Milan (1995), Bhatt pushed Manisha to drop her trained acting instincts and speak her lines like a real small-town girl. She later said he forced her to 'unlearn' everything — and that made her performance feel raw.
