Long-Term Partnership

The Thyagarajan & Nalini partnership

After 21 years apart, they came back together for Adaikalam (2006). They didn't share a set between 1985 and 2006. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Ethanai Konam Ethanai Parvai (1983) to Saahasam (2016). Nalla Naal is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Nalla Naal; the 2010s to Saahasam. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Thyagarajan was a rising hero when he specifically requested Nalini as his leading lady for Ethanai Konam Ethanai Parvai (1983). He had seen her work in Malayalam and felt her expressive eyes would match the film's emotional tone. The director agreed only after Nalini did a screen test — which she aced in one take.
  • On the set of Nalla Naal (1984), Thyagarajan would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Nalini laugh. She then used that genuine laughter in the next take, giving her scenes a spontaneous warmth that the director kept in the final cut. He called it 'the laugh trick'.
  • During the shoot of Kaval (1985), Nalini's mother fell seriously ill. Thyagarajan quietly arranged for a car to take her mother to the hospital and rescheduled all their scenes to the evening so Nalini could visit every morning. She never asked him to do it.
  • Their 2006 reunion film Adaikalam was the first Tamil movie to be shot entirely inside a single prison set built in a Chennai studio. The claustrophobic look of the film directly inspired the production design of the 2010 prison-break thriller 'Yuddham Sei'.
  • Nalini once told a magazine: 'Thyagarajan never treated me like a co-star. He treated me like a partner in the scene. If my character was supposed to win an argument, he would actually let me win — even off-camera, just to keep the energy real.'
