Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Uthama Purushan (1989), almost didn't happen. Director K. S. Ravikumar originally wanted a different actor opposite Prabhu. Charlie lobbied hard for the role, and Ravikumar finally gave in after Charlie promised to deliver a natural performance without any of his usual stagey mannerisms.
• In Duet (1994), Prabhu and Charlie played brothers with a massive age gap. Charlie, the younger one, actually set the comic timing on set. Prabhu admitted later that Charlie would deliberately slow down his dialogue delivery to make Prabhu's reactions land harder — a trick they kept using in every film after.
• Their 1993 film Uthama Raasa directly inspired the 2005 hit Chandramukhi. Director P. Vasu saw how Prabhu and Charlie's brotherly banter worked in that film and decided to cast them again in the horror-comedy template — which later became a massive trend in Tamil cinema.
• Charlie was a huge fan of Prabhu's father, Sivaji Ganesan. On the sets of Raja Kaiya Vacha (1990), Charlie would quietly sit and watch Prabhu rehearse, then later tell him: 'You have your father's eyes in that scene.' Prabhu said that was the only compliment that ever made him nervous.
• Charlie once said about Prabhu: 'He is the only co-star who never once asked me to change my dialogue. He just listened and reacted. That's why our scenes look real.' — from a 2003 interview promoting Banda Paramasivam.
• In Ponmanam (1998), a film that tanked at the box office, Prabhu and Charlie tried something new: they swapped their usual roles. Prabhu played the loud, impulsive character while Charlie played the calm, mature one. It didn't work with audiences, but both later said it was their most fun shoot because they got to 'play each other'.
