• Suruli Rajan was a popular comedian when he agreed to play a supporting role in Manthoppu Killiye (1979) — but only because M. A. Kaja promised him a meatier part in the next film. That next film became Kathal Kathal Kathal (1980), where Rajan got to play a double role.
• In Theru Vilakku (1980), Kaja wrote a long monologue for Rajan's character. Rajan kept flubbing it on set. So Kaja rewrote the entire scene as a back-and-forth between two characters — turning a weakness into the film's most talked-about sequence.
