• Ramanna was a rising director when he cast Saroja as the lead in Rathinapuri Ilavarasi (1960). She was already a star, but he took a risk — she had never played a royal character before. He bet on her range, and it paid off.
• On the set of Ondru Pattal Undu Vazhvu (1960), Ramanna would let Saroja improvise her comic timing. She'd throw in a line or a gesture mid-scene, and he'd keep the camera rolling. That film's funniest moments came from her spontaneous choices.
• Manappandhal (1961) was the first Tamil film where a female lead's character openly rejected an arranged marriage and walked out — a direct result of Saroja pushing Ramanna to write a stronger arc for her role. That scene is still referenced in Tamil cinema debates.
• During the shoot of Rathinapuri Ilavarasi, Saroja's mother fell ill. Ramanna personally drove her to the hospital every night after pack-up, then rescheduled the next day's shoot so she could visit. They never spoke about it publicly.
• Saroja once told a magazine: 'Ramanna never shouted on set. He'd just look at me with those tired eyes, and I'd know I had to do better. That look worked faster than any lecture.'
• In Ondru Pattal Undu Vazhvu, Ramanna deliberately shot their emotional confrontation scene in one long take — no cuts. He knew Saroja could hold the tension, and he trusted her to carry the scene without his editing. She did it in one take.
