• Karthik was the one who pushed for Gokula Krishnan to direct 'Muthu Kaalai' (1995). The producer wanted a more established name, but Karthik insisted after seeing Gokula's earlier assistant work. That film bombed hard — 1/10 — but Karthik didn't drop him. He gave him two more shots.
• On 'Poovarasan' (1996), Gokula Krishnan deliberately wrote scenes where Karthik had to react silently — long close-ups with no dialogue. He knew Karthik's eyes did more work than his lines. That film became their only hit together (6.5/10).
• During 'Udhavikku Varalaamaa' (1998), Karthik and Gokula Krishnan had a falling out over the climax. Gokula wanted a tragic ending; Karthik refused, saying audiences needed a happy one. They shot both versions. The theatrical release used Karthik's pick. They never worked together again after that film.
• Karthik once said in a 2000 interview: 'Gokula was the only director who made me act without my voice. He'd say, 'Stop talking. Let your face do the talking.' I hated it then. Now I miss it.'
• The only reason 'Poovarasan' got a theatrical run was because Karthik personally called distributors and promised them his next film if they released this one. That promise — his next film — became 'Ullathai Allitha' (1996), which turned into a massive hit and revived his career. So Gokula's flop indirectly saved Karthik's stardom.
