Partnership facts

• They only worked together in 1960 — and all three films released that same year. It was a one-year sprint, not a long partnership. Nobody planned it that way; the films just lined up back-to-back.
• In 'Rathinapuri Ilavarasi', Radha played the villain and Mahalingam the hero. Their scenes crackled because Radha deliberately underplayed his menace, letting Mahalingam's theatrical style dominate. Mahalingam later said Radha 'gave him the space to breathe on screen.'
• Despite sharing screen space in three films, the two never became close friends. Mahalingam was a trained stage actor and singer; Radha was a raw, instinctive performer. They respected each other's craft but kept their distance off-camera.
• 'Kavalai Illaadha Manithan' was a rare comedy-drama where both actors played against type — Radha as a comic sidekick, Mahalingam as a bumbling lead. That film directly inspired a wave of 'common man' comedies in the early 60s, including the hit 'Nadodi Mannan'.
